HCC Foundation Grants Easement to Benefti 911 System

The Herkimer County College Foundation recently approved a request from Verizon for an easement to dig and place additional copper cable in the ground near the Foundation-owned Campus Meadows student housing complex. The cable runs across the property to the Herkimer County 911 building. The increase in cable capacity will provide the 911 facility with the ability to increase the capacity of its phone lines, which is becoming necessary due to advances in technology and increases in call volume.

In addition to answering emergency calls from throughout Herkimer County, the 911 facility functions as an emergency operations center for the county. In this capacity, the facility is used as a central meeting place and communications center for many public safety entities. “In emergency situations our conference room becomes an emergency operations center and we activate all kinds of communications,” said John Cipriano, County Communications and Geographic Information Systems Coordinator. “Requirements for communications today are much different than when the center was built in 1999.”

Bruce Ward, Vice President of the HCC Foundation, said “We are happy to be able to help Verizon, the 911 Center and the community with this project. The expansion of phone lines will enhance the safety and protection of our county residents.”

Established in 1967 as a not-for-profit corporation, the HCC Foundation assists the College by providing more than $120,000 annually to support student scholarships, ongoing professional development, independent research and instructional technology.
Environmental Conservation Initiatives at HCCC

Herkimer County Community College has expanded its environmental conservation and waste reduction program to include several new initiatives.

HCCC has implemented the first food composting program on a college campus in the two-county region. In partnership with the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority, the College installed a self-contained, three-cubic yard Earth Tub Food Waste Composting System with the capability of composting 40 to 200 pounds of pre-consumer waste per day. “HCCC has developed an excellent solid waste management and recycling program, and it is the perfect time to take waste reduction to a new level,” said David Lupinski, Director of Recycling for the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority.

The benefits of composting food waste include reducing waste in landfills, reducing the cost of hauling and disposing of solid waste and lessening the waste of large quantities of recyclable raw materials. “ This approach to handling food waste is environmentally sound and good practice. It complements an already impressive waste management program at Herkimer, and it is a practical way to further educate our students and support their interest in environmental issues,” said HCCC President Ann Marie Murray.

The College recently distributed reusable shopping bags to all faculty, staff and students. Donated by AmeriCU Credit Union, the cloth bags were distributed in an effort to cut down on the number of plastic bags used.

Battery recycling containers have been placed throughout the campus. “Students and staff are encouraged to bring their used batteries from home and discard them in our recycling containers instead of putting them in the trash,” said Tom Stock, Director of Facilities.

In College and housing facilities, equipment has been upgraded from old technology to energy-efficient technologies: motion activated lights, LED lighting, compact fluorescent bulbs, programmable energy set-back thermostats and low-flow shower heads have been installed. The College transports Styrofoam packaging to Meyda Tiffany in Yorkville, NY, and recycles paper, containers and electronics.

The Faculty-Student Association, food services provider for the College, recently made a shift to using biodegradable plates, reusable plastic food baskets, paper cups, wrapping, baskets and lining, significantly reducing the use of polystyrene. Concentrated coffee machines are used to brew coffee sold in the cafeteria and bookstore, eliminating coffee grounds and filter paper.

“We are proud of our environmental conservation program on campus, and hope it encourages our students and staff to recycle and conserve resources in their homes as well,” Stock said.
Herkimer Student Spends Summer Biking Across the United States

Herkimer County Community College senior Satoshi Tomo, from Japan, spent the summer riding his bicycle across the United States from New York to Seattle, Washington. Tomo began his journey in Herkimer on May 10, 2008, as soon as he completed his final exams on campus. He arrived in Seattle on July 19, riding an average of 60 miles per day.

"Once I got used to it, I went 70-75 miles per day. On July 4th, I rode over 100 miles and saw fireworks in a small town in Montana. They were beautiful," Tomo said. While touring the country, he pitched his $20 tent ("the cheapest I could find at Wal-Mart") in meadows and fields and cooked for himself. The only time he ran into trouble was in Chicago, where the police shined a flashlight into his tent and asked him what he was doing. "Once I explained they told me to relax and have a good night but I couldn't, it was so cold and windy!" Tomo said.

Tomo rode a $200 GMC mountain bike he had purchased on the Internet. He had four flat tires and broken spokes along the way, but found several bike repair shops where the people where very helpful. He visited with various friends as he biked across the U.S. Prior to coming to HCCC in 2007, Tomo had attended a Japanese program at Edmonds Community College in Seattle several years ago, where he had a host mother. "When I arrived in Seattle I called and asked if I can spend some time with her," Tomo said. "She said, surprised, 'you are going to drive from New York to Seattle?' I told her I'm here already, I rode my bike!

On his 71-day trip, Tomo logged 3,310 miles on his bike. He enjoyed the wide-open spaces, and was most amazed by the farm fields full of cows. "Where I come from there are no cows. I rode for days without seeing any people. The animals were my friends," he added. This was not the first long trip for Tomo. He had biked 700 miles from Tokyo to southern Japan in 2003, and it was that trip that inspired him to bike across the United States.

A General Studies major at HCCC, Tomo plans to transfer to a four-year SUNY college when he graduates next May. He hasn't decided what field to pursue yet. "I had planned think about that over the summer, but I was so exhausted every day after riding, I just had to concentrate on my bike," he said with a laugh.

Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Teams Achieve National Ranking

Herkimer County Community College’s men’s and women’s cross country teams achieved a national ranking after their season opener. After running against Division I Syracuse University and Colgate along with top Region III competitors Mohawk Valley Community College and SUNY Delhi, both the men’s and women’s teams have been polled tenth in the nation.
The men’s team is led by freshman Ian Sanchez, Ossining, NY and has a strong group of first year runners including: Jake Raner, Mexico NY, Jose Maldonado, Ilion NY, Brian Majka, New York Mills NY, and Eric Green, Millerton NY. Second year runners include Nick Bloom, Chittenango NY, Glen Kelly, Queens NY, and Nick DeLango, Pawling NY. Head coach Julie DelMedico said “the chemistry between these runners is great and really seems to help on longer, more difficult practices as well as during meets. I think that by the end of the year the split times will be really incredible.”

The women are led by sophomores Kathleen Ozog, Ilion NY and Melissa Cleeton, Liverpool NY, Amanda Link, North Patchogue NY, Tammy Carney, Herkimer, and freshman Deena Kertesz, Pine Bush, NY. “The women are still getting into the swing of things after a rocky start, so to be ranked this early in the season is great.
The team’s next meet takes place Saturday, September 13 at the Oswego Invitational.
He then signed a contract with the Cleveland Caps of the United States Inter-Regional Soccer League (U.S.I.S.L.) before accepting the head coaching position at HCCC in 1998. In 2000, Aragon was named to the NJCAA All-Century Team along with former U.S. National Team coach Bruce Arena and MLS goal keeper Zach Thorton.

HCCC Director of Athletics Donald Dutcher said, "I cannot think of a better selection for the NJCAA Soccer Hall of Fame. Pepe has always conducted himself in a first class manner and what he has done for the sport of soccer is immeasurable. We are very fortunate to have him as our soccer coach at HCCC."

Aragon's induction will take place on Friday, November 7 at the NJCAA Division III National Soccer Final Four banquet in Richland, Texas.

Herzog Publishes Article

Jennifer Herzog, Assistant Professor of Biology at Herkimer County Community College, recently published an article ASMCUE: From Buffalo to Boston and Celebrating 15 Years! in MicrobeLibrary’s Focus on Microbiology Education (FOME) newsmagazine.

FOME provides undergraduate microbiology educators with technical, yet practical and feasible advice for improving teaching and learning in the microbiological sciences.

“The articles published in FOME are often consulted by microbiology and/or biology educators when they are looking for new ideas or new ways of thinking in microbiology teaching or research,” said Lucy Kluckhohn Jones, professor in the life sciences department of Santa Monica College, Santa Monica, CA, and editor-in-chief of FOME. “Educators rely heavily on MicrobeLibrary for enriching the classroom and laboratory experiences.”

Herzog’s article is an important addition to MicrobeLibrary, an online, searchable collection of more than 2,000 peer-reviewed resources for undergraduate microbiology and biology education. Given the current social and political climate, it is more important than ever that authoritative materials are available to help college faculty teach students about the significance and impact of microorganisms in the world.

FOME is one of many resources available in MicrobeLibrary. The library builds upon the scientific expertise, intellectual creativity, and private collections of the members of ASM and other researchers of microbiology and biology from around the world; it receives more than 1 million hits per month.

Herzog was appointed to the HCCC faculty in 2001. She holds a B.S. from Utica College of Syracuse University and an M.S. from Yale University School of Medicine.
SUNY Board Approves the Appointment of Dr. Ann Marie Murray as President

The SUNY Board of Trustees today approved the appointment of Dr. Ann Marie Murray as President of Herkimer County Community College, effective August 11, 2008, as approved by the Board of Trustees at the College in May.

Dr. Murray currently is the vice president for academic affairs at Broome Community College, a post she has held since 2005. In that capacity, she has been responsible for the oversight of all of the academic programs and functions of the college, including schools of business, liberal arts and human services, and applied science, continuing education, international education, learning resource center, teaching resource center, and online learning. Dr. Murray will replace Ronald F. Williams, who served 22 years as president of HCCC.

SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman Carl T. Hayden said, "Herkimer County Community College recently celebrated 40 years of service to families and businesses in the Mohawk Valley, where the campus provides accessible and affordable education and training to thousands of students each year. I am very confident that the search committee has found the ideal candidate to carry on the Herkimer tradition. On behalf of the Board and SUNY System Administration, I also wish to thank Ron Williams for his long and esteemed service as the campus’ president."

Interim SUNY Chancellor Dr. John B. Clark said, "Dr. Murray’s wealth of experience in the community college sector – particularly at two of SUNY’s strongest campuses – is certain to bring great benefit to HCCC students, faculty and staff as well as the surrounding community. It has been my pleasure to recommend that this appointment and I commend the Board of Trustees at SUNY for naming Dr. Murray to this important position."

Dr. Murray said, "I am very thankful to the SUNY Board of Trustees for their confidence in my ability to serve Herkimer County Community College as its third president. I look forward to working with the students, faculty, staff and trustees, as well as the community, to meet the challenges of moving this fine institution into the future."

This is the third consecutive year that Herkimer has won a NATYCAA Cup, and the first time in college history to finish second.
The College of DuPage (IL) came in first place and Gloucester County College (NJ) came in third. Herkimer received the top-ranking among scholarship and non-scholarship community college athletic programs in New York State. HCCC Director of Athletics Donald Dutcher received the award at the national convention in Dallas Texas. “We are very proud of this ranking. It is a total team effort,” said Dutcher.
NATYCAA is the professional organization of two-year college athletic administrators with membership open to all two-year colleges in the nation.
Notice Regarding Stolen Data

SunGard Higher Education, a software company that has provided IT services to Herkimer County Community College and the State University of New York for a number of years, notified SUNY that a laptop belonging to one of their consultants was stolen and has not been recovered. The laptop was protected with a strong password to access the operating system. While identity theft does not appear to be the motive behind the incident, we regard all information security matters very seriously and are working with SunGard Higher Education to take necessary steps to protect our students and constituents. HCCC's Information Services department has analyzed and verified the data, and the College is notifying by mail all those who may be affected. SunGard will offer affected individuals a two full years of free credit monitoring service through Triple AlertSM.

If you received a notification letter from HCCC, it includes a PIN--not a credit monitoring activation code as described in the letter. To get your credit monitoring activation code, please call the Sungard information center at 866-520-2408, give the representative your PIN, and they will give you a credit monitoring activation code as well as helpful step-by-step instructions.
