This course examines the functions of police officers and the pressures under which they work to protect individual freedoms and describe historical and contemporary factors shaping individual and group identity. Interpretation of laws is stressed with particular attention to the conflict between what police feel they need to perform their duties and protection of personal rights, access, equity, and participation in current or future social justice action.
