Paralegal Studies Certificate

The program trains students in the core legal content areas—torts; property/real estate law, contracts; wills, trusts and estates; legal research and writing; civil procedure and litigation; criminal law; family law; and legal ethics.

As a graduate you’ll be able to apply the ethical rules and aspirations governing the legal profession to specific factual scenarios, conduct legal research on defined issues via computer-assisted and manual methods, and prepare drafts of legal memoranda and select pleadings pertinent to various legal content areas.

Upon completion of the certificate program you’ll be prepared to work as a paralegal/legal assistant in law firms, District Attorney's Offices, Public Defender's Offices, business, governmental agencies, or other settings where paralegals are utilized.

Employment is available in law firms, district attorney and public defender offices, businesses, governmental agencies, and other settings where paralegals are utilized. The program’s focus is on acquiring training in the core legal content areas such as torts, property/real estate law, contracts, wills, trusts, estates, legal research and writing, civil procedure and litigation, criminal law, family law, and legal ethics. This certificate program is designed for those who seek employment in terminal paralegal positions and do not intend to pursue an associate or bachelor’s degree in the near future.

The Paralegal Studies Certificate program may also be completed entirely online through our Internet Academy. We offer the same level of care and service to online students as we do to on-campus students. All necessary services are accessible online, including registration, placement testing, bill payment, tutoring, book purchasing, and academic advisement.

Law is a fluid field in that it is constantly evolving to reflect the ideals of our society. Also, the law lets you make valid, and hopefully persuasive, arguments for either side of an issue. Our system of resolving complex legal problems involves what is termed the “adversarial” system in which counsel for each side make their best legal and factual arguments and the judge or jury decides the issue. Being involved in this process is very intellectually satisfying. Being a part of this process is humbling.
