Financial Aid Programs are administered by both the federal and state governments. A list of available programs is below. Contact the Financial Aid Office to learn more about any of these programs!
Federal Financial Aid Programs

Federal Pell Grant
A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are determined by the student’s need (as determined by the FAFSA) and awarded only to students who have not earned a bachelor’s or professional degree. Students must be enrolled for at least three credit hours and be matriculated to be eligible for a Pell Grant.
- Award Amounts: 2022-2023 maximum full time $6,895, minimum full time $692
- How to Apply: Complete the FAFSA application
- Duration: PELL Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU) - The amount of Federal Pell Grant funds you may receive over your lifetime is limited by federal law to be the equivalent of six years (600%) of Pell Grant funding. The maximum amount of Pell Grant funding you can receive each year is equal to 150%.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
This grant is for undergraduates with exceptional financial need. Funds are limited and priority is given to students who file their FAFSA early. Students must be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant to receive SEOG.
- Award Amount: Amounts vary from $100 - $4000

Federal Work Study Program
Federal Work Study provides part time jobs for students that are determined to have financial need. Students are paid on a bi-weekly basis. Students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA to retain work-study positions. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study.
- Award Amounts: Minimum wage to $13.20 per hour depending on job requirements. Students generally work 6-8 hours per week depending on their financial aid eligibility.
- How to Apply: Complete the FAFSA form. Due to limited funding, priority will be given to students who file the FAFSA early.
- Duration: Awarded annually
- Repayment: No repayment is required. Students will be paid biweekly for hours worked and the funds are not applied to the students college bill.

Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)
This state grant is provided to New York State residents attending a New York State school full-time. Students must be matriculated and be in good academic standing. Funds may be applied to tuition only. The program is administered by New York State Higher Education Serviced Corporation.
- Award Amount: $500 up to the cost of Tuition (at Herkimer College)

Aid for Part-Time Study (APTS)
This state grant is for New York State residents who are matriculated, enrolled part-time (3-11 credit hours) and meet the income guidelines. Awards vary based on funding, the number of eligible candidates and the number of credits they are registered for. Awards are applied to the student's tuition only.
- Award Amount: Varies based on funding, and number of credits eligible candidates are registered for.
- How to Apply: Complete the APTS application and include student and parent's (if applicable) NYS tax return(s)
- Duration: Awarded annually

Part-Time TAP
This state grant is for students who were first-time freshmen in 2006-2007 or thereafter, who are New York State residents attending a New York State college taking 6-11 credit hours. Eligible students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and have earned at least 12 credit hours in each of the previous two semesters. All 24 credit hours must have been earned at the institution they are requesting the award from. Funds may be applied to tuition only. New York State Higher Education Serviced Corporation administers this program.
- Award Amounts: Percentage of full-time TAP award based on registered credits up to the cost of tuition.
- Eligible non-degree program(s): Logistics Management Essentials Microcredential

Excelsior Scholarship
Under this groundbreaking program, families and individuals making up to $125,000 per year may qualify to attend college tuition-free at Herkimer College because it’s a SUNY school. To apply you must:
- Be a resident of New York State
- Earn 30 credits per calendar year
- Plan to live in New York for the number of terms Excelsior was awarded

Herkimer College Foundation Scholarships
Foundation Scholarships are awarded to students who meet the individual scholarship criteria. A separate application process is required. Applications are available online during the later part of the fall semester.
