Women’s Soccer advances to Region III Championship
(Kalli Warmingham gives the Generals a 2-0 lead in the first half Wednesday on a free kick).
(Sydney Stanley had eight saves in 80 minutes on Wednesday, collecting the team's 15th shutout of the season).
HERKIMER, NY – Facing the only team to give them a loss all season, the #1 Herkimer Generals women’s soccer team avenged #8 North Country at home on Wednesday (10/27), defeating the Saints 4-0 to advance to the Region III Championship game for a consecutive season.
Herkimer (15-1, 3-1) treated North Country like every other opponent they’ve faced at home this season, tough. The team hasn’t allowed a goal at home, outscoring opponents 44-to-0 in the process throughout 10 games played at Wehrum Stadium.
With the defense doing their part, the Generals scored three goals in the first half, all by different players. Nicole Doolen (Ilion, NY) got the Generals on the board in the fourth minute on a cross from teammate Teigha Ward (Ilion, NY). It was Doolen’s fifth goal of the season, breaking a streak of nine game without a goal.
Making it 2-0 in the 27th and 3-0 in the 40th was Kalli Warmingham (Newport, NY) and Ward. Warmingham scored her third goal of the season on a free kick, drilling it through the top-left of the net after teammate Alexys Bolton (Middleville, NY) was taken down illegally by a Saint defender. Warmingham has come on as of late, scoring two goals in her last three games.
As for Ward, the sophomore netted her 25th goal unassisted, outworking a Saint defender for the ball just outside the 18, then used her right foot to score on the left side of the net. It was the forwards sixth goal in the team’s last five games played, ranked third nationally in goals now.
Netting the lone goal in the second half was Michaela Bianca (Guilderland, NY). She finished a perfectly placed ball by Warmingham in the 65th to the left of the net for her 13th goal of the season. Bianca now has 13 goals and assists on the season, ranked 23rd and ninth in the nation.
In goal for the Generals was Sydney Stanley (Schoharie, NY). Stanley got her seventh consecutive shutout thanks in part to a solid day which consisted of eight saves. Leann Clark (St. Johnsville, NY) relieved Stanley in the 80th minute and collected three saves herself, bringing the team to 15 shutouts in total.
Up next for the Generals is Tompkins-Cortland Community College. The #5 Panthers defeated #4 Genesee 2-1 on the road Tuesday, advancing them to the Region III Championship game against the Generals on Sunday (11/1). Both teams have already face one another with Herkimer winning that game in Dryden, NY 2-0 in regulation. Game time for the District ‘A’ Championship is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Wehrum Stadium in Herkimer, NY.
