Generals Women's Soccer Team Has An Impressive 2nd Half

Tompkins Cortland 1 – 12 Herkimer

Sunday saw the Women Generals travel to Cortland to take on Tompkins-Cortland. The team desperate to make up for the hiccup of the previous week against Finger Lakes.

With Donata Oaksford and Piper Keyes still recovering from ankle injuries, the Generals also had to make the trip without Liz Cingranelli who missed out through illness. Kurstin Gay returned to the goal whilst Isabella Smith moved from the goal to the striker position. Natalie Little dropped back to Center Back, the position she won 1st Team All-conference honors last year from United Coaches Association.

The first half saw the Generals control possession without threatening TC3’s goal too much. It took a corner kick to finally open the scoring, with Lydia Reimer crossing for Delaney Beardsley to volley in her first ever goal at the college level. Soon after, a winding run from Maddy Altamura ended with her crushing a shot off the inside of the post before Isabella Smith turned in the rebound for the West Canada alumni to mark her first goal since U10 AYSO!

Half Time came and went with the Generals up 2-0.

The second half started, 20 seconds went by, Lydia Reimer scored her first goal of the day. Lydia would go on to score two more goals in the second half to complete her first of what will no doubt be many hat tricks for the Generals. Natalie Little moved from Center Defense to striker for the second half, the move saw her record 4 assists and a goal for herself, she was hugely important for the teams ability to create and score goals in the second half. McKenzie Magnusson also took a strangle hold of the midfield in the second half, dominating defensively and moving the ball around the field, she would contribute a goal and an assist but will be disappointed not to add to her goal tally, McKenzie got into some great positions but luck wasn’t on her side.

Miranda Brown chipped in with her first ever College goal later in the second half, the Rome Free Academy graduate was a ball of energy all day and made a lung busting run from deep midfield to get on the end of a shot that cannoned off the cross bar to fire her goal into the roof of the net.

The MVP of the game was Canajoharie alumni Taya Yacobucci. Taya’s second half performance will go down in history, scoring four goals and having three assists. Taya has been threatening to have a game like this the first two weeks but it just didn’t click, until today. The explosive midfielder burst through the defense time and again and either found the back of the net herself or laid the ball off for a teammate. Taya’s performance saw her named NJCAA Division 3 player of the week.

Next up is a home game vs Fulton-Montgomery on Saturday the 17th 1pm at Wehrum Stadium.
