Herkimer scores early and often against Vikings

HERKIMER, NY – Starting off fast had been an issue for Lady Generals basketball until today, beating Hudson Valley Community College 58-39 in a Mountain Valley Conference face off in the varsity gym.

Herkimer (2-3, 1-1 MVC) jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first 10 minutes against the Vikings with big contributions coming from Samantha Randio (Ravena, NY), Shi Williams (Syracuse, NY) and Kaylyn Dickerson (Douglasville, GA). Randio finished the first half with eight points (nine total), Williams finished with nine (16 total) and Dickerson finished with 11 points (13 total).

Dickerson really showed up with eight minutes left in the half after she blocked a Vikings shot, which lead to Raven Griffin (Syracuse, NY) assisting on a lay up to Randio, giving Herkimer a 16-point lead (20-4).

The solid defensive play continued on the next possession when Korey Bunal (Rome, NY) stole it, leading to another easy bucket, this time from Randio on an assist from Dickerson, pushing the score to 22-4.

The final three minutes of the first half were engulfed by Randio, this time on the defensive end, as she stole the ball which led to a Shi Williams field goal, then made a lay up as time expired, giving her team a 36-13 lead at half.

Highlights from the second half occurred in the span of 10 minutes when the Lady Generals went on a 12-2 run thanks to buckets by Shahadah Williams, Shi Williams and Emily Rexford (Canton, NY). Rexford's final field goal came from the three-point line, giving Herkimer the 58-31 lead with 2:42 left in regulation. Rexford finished with nine points.

The Lady Generals next game is against Corning Community College. Herkimer will take on the Red Barons in their building on November 23rd. The game is expected to start at 12p.m.
