Generals have seven qualify for Nationals in first meet
ROCHESTER, NY – The Herkimer Generals competed in their first meet of the season last weekend at the University of Rochester. The men finished sixth overall as a team, scoring 47 points, while the women finished 20th overall, amassing five points.
Running well for the men was Wendall Williams (Syrcuse, NY), Joseph Shinn (New Rochelle, NY), Thomas Gibbs IV (Brooklyn, NY), Chris Morales (Beacon, NY) and Anthony Ciaccia (Selkirk, NY). Each had Top 10 finishes, led by Williams three first-place finishes in the 100, 200 and Long Jump. Williams broke a stadium record with a 7.45 meter long jump, then ran a 10.83 in the 100 and 22.11 in the 200.
Shinn had two second place finishes in the 100-meter Hurdles and 4X100-meter Relay, which consisted of Mitch Brutus (Irvington, NJ), Shinn, Gibbs IV and Williams. In the hurdles, Shinn finished with a 15.12, while in the relay, the group finished with a 43.38.
Gibbs IV second top finish came in the long jump, where his best distance was 6.24m, good enough for ninth.
As for Morales and Ciaccia, each did well in the Triple Jump. Herkimer went eighth, ninth and 10th, with Morales jumping a 12.11m, Ciaccia jumping a 12.11m and Justin Stewart (Brooklyn, NY) jumping a 11.76m.
Rounding out a solid day for the men was their 4X800-meter relay, which finished in 11th. Sam Morrett (Cohoes, NY), Philip Tanner (Deposit, NY), Marckenson Luctama (White Plains, NY) and David Stanley (Brooklyn, NY) finished with a time of 9:47.87.
For the women, they had two Top 10 finishes in the 100-meter and Javelin Throw. Kaylyn Dickerson (Douglasville, GA) ran a 13.17 in the 100, good enough for sixth place. Natasha Woods (Syracuse, NY) threw the javelin 26.11m, which gave her seventh place.
Top 15 performances came from Dickerson, Victoria Campanian (Glenfield, NY), Haruka Murakami (Ibaraki, Japan), Tianderah Twichell (West Winfield, NY) and Jessica Inserra (Yorkville, NY). Dickerson placed 12th in the 400-meter Dash (1:01.35), while Campanian, Murakami, Twichell and Inserra placed 12th in the 4X800-meter Relay. They finished with a time of 12:24.81.
Herkimer’s next meet is this Saturday (4/12). The team will travel to Nazareth College looking to qualify more runners for Regionals and Nationals. The meet is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
