Generals defeat second straight ranked opponent at home

(The Generals defense collected their 10th shutout of the season against Broome Saturday).

HERKIMER, NY – Hosting their second straight Top 5 opponent at home on Saturday (10/3), the #2 Herkimer Generals women’s soccer team remained undefeated against ranked opponents this season, defeating #5 SUNY Broome 1-0 in regulation.

Herkimer (10-1, 1-1) has scored two goals in their last 180 minutes played after totaling 50 goals during an eight-game win streak to start the season. Scoring the lone goal against the Hornets in the second half was Grace Johnson (Tully, NY). The freshman midfielder drove an Michaela Bianca (Guilderland, NY) pass in the top of the net over the outstretched arms of goalie Erinn Caitlin for her ninth goal of the season in the 68th minute. Johnson has accumulated game winners in her last two starts, scoring in 6 of her 11 starts for the Generals. As for Bianca, she is now tied with teammate Teigha Ward (Ilion, NY) for the team lead in assists with 10. That number is the seventh best total in the nation.

Starting in goal and capturing her 10th shutout was Sydney Stanley (Schoharie, NY). The sophomore saved two shots in 90 minutes played, not allowing a goal in any of the Generals wins this season. Currently, Stanley leads the nation in goals against average (0.18), wins (10) and shutouts (10).

Herkimer hosts their third consecutive home game this Wednesday (10/7) at Wehrum Stadium. Traveling to Herkimer will be conference rival Mohawk Valley Community College. The Hawks are 3-5-1 and 2-1-1 as of late. Game time between these two is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
