Big game by Vasquez, collects two goals and one assist
(Brian Vasquez scores his first goal of the game in the 57th on an assist from Femi Kaffo, making it 1-0).
HERKIMER, NY – Getting another multi goal performance, this time from sophomore Brian Vasquez on Wednesday (10/14), the #5 Herkimer Generals men’s soccer team defeated Jefferson Community College 3-1 at home.
Herkimer (11-2-0) scored all of their goals in the second half against their Mid State Athletic Conference opponent, to be more specific, in the final 32 minutes. Breaking the 0-0 tie in the 57th was Vasquez (White Plains, NY). He took a deep cross from Femi Kaffo (London, England) and headed in the net for his fifth goal of the season, taking advantage of more playing time as of late.
Jefferson tried to spoil the game for Herkimer two minutes later after Cannoneers’ Eric Gibbs tied it at 1-1, but Vasquez wasn’t having any of it, netting his second goal in the 77th, the eventual game winner. It was his second multi-goal performance this season, adding an assist in the 81st after teammate Kevin Van der Slik (Zoetermeer, Holland) headed home a pass into the top right of the goal past Hayden Peterson for the two goal advantage. Van der Slik now leads the Generals with 13 goals.
Allowing another goal at home after five straight shutouts was Morrice Baker (Bridgeport, CT). The sophomore didn’t register a save either in 90 minutes of play with the Generals collecting 17 more shots on goal than Jefferson.
Up next for Herkimer is the best team in the nation, #1 Genesee Community College. The Cougars are undefeated this season, 16-0 after a 19-0 win over Finger Lakes Community College Wednesday. It will be the Generals third ranked opponent they’ve faced this season, currently 2-0 with wins over Tompkins-Cortland and Hudson Valley on the road. Herkimer will host Genesee on Saturday (10/17) at Wehrum Stadium. Kickoff is schedule for 3 p.m.
