Herkimer College baseball player Troy Butler selected by Colorado Rockies in 2023 MLB Draft
Herkimer College baseball player Troy Butler, Fort Plain, NY, was selected in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, July 11.
Butler was a pitcher for the Generals this past season after transferring to Herkimer College from Binghamton University. He was dominant on the mound going 6-2 with a team-best 16.32 K/9 in 44 2/3 innings pitched.
Butler is the sixth player drafted in the history of the Herkimer College baseball program and the first under Lane Potter who completed his first season as head coach. In 2022, pitcher Dale Stanavich was drafted in the eighth round by the Miami Marlins.
"Troy has a big-time arm and a ton of upside to progress in the Rockies system," said Potter. "We're all super excited that he gets the chance to live his dream, and we can't wait to watch him develop."
Herkimer College Dean of Students/Director of Athletics Donald Dutcher said, “Troy’s draft selection is not only a huge accomplishment for him, but it is a testament to the quality of the baseball program here at Herkimer College. We are very proud to have yet another Herkimer General go pro.”
Butler has agreed to terms with the team and will report to the Rockies rookie-level affiliate in Scottsdale, AZ, where he will begin his professional career. He is a General Studies major at Herkimer, and is currently enrolled for the summer session.
