Points come easy against Hornets
HERKIMER, NY – Despite starting off slow in each half against Broome Community College on Saturday in the varsity gym, the Herkimer Women's Basketball team played well, beating the Hornets 68-41.
The Lady Generals (3-5, 1-1 MVC) got behind within the first four minutes of play until sophomore guard Samantha Randio(Ravena, NY) hit her first two free throws of the game, putting the team on the board 5-2 with 16:22 left in the half. Randio finished with nine points in the contest.
Consecutive three-point field goals by Alyssa Craig (Fonda, NY) and Emily Rexford (Canton, NY) led to their first lead (8-7) with 15:10 in the first half, allowing the Lady Generals to set up full court pressure on the Hornets. From there, Herkimer went on an 8-0 run with baskets by Rexford, Korey Bunal (Rome, NY) and Shahadah Williams (Syracuse, NY). The final basket to Williams came from Bunal, increasing the General lead to 16-7.
It didn't stop there, Herkimer had baskets come from Randio, Williams, Kaylyn Dickerson (Douglasville, GA) and Bunal in the span of five minutes, building the lead to 31-14 on a 15-4 run. Williams finished the half with eight points (18 total), Dickerson finished the half with two points (four total), and Bunal finished the half with six points (six total).
In the second half, Broome opened up with an 8-0 run, knocking the deficit to single digits (36-29), but two steals on consecutive possessions by Williams led to four points and a 43-30 lead. After trading some baskets, Rexford took over, scoring 12 points in the span of three minutes on three made three-point field goals and an 'and one', pushing the lead to 22 (61-39). Rexford finished the game with 21 points.
Getting in the act with less than three minutes left in regulation was freshman forward Eriel Jenkins (Royal Oak, MI). Her made basket gave the team a 63-41 lead, which eventually ended at 68-41, for the 27-point victory.
The win over the Hornets snaps a two-game losing streak for the Lady Generals. They'll look to keep it up tomorrow (12/8) when they host Tompkins-Cortland Community College. Tip off against the panthers is 1 p.m.
