Generals Win Season Opener With Goal From Ward

(Danielle Nicosia comes close to netting her first goal of the season on Saturday against Holyoke).

(Teigha Ward looks to get her second goal of the game Saturday against the Cougars).

HERKIMER, NY – Led by Teigha Wards’ (Ilion, NY) goal in the 38th minute of Saturdays game against Holyoke Community College, the Generals defeated the Cougars 1-0 on Saturday at Wehrum Stadium to win their season opener.

Herkimer (1-0, 0-0) had 11 shots on goal in the first half and nine in the second, seeing many of their players get quality attempts on the defense. Ward was one of those players, but came through for Herkimer in the 38th minute when Kalli Warmingham found her just outside the 18 with a nice touch, allowing Ward to strike the ball in the back of the net for the eventual game winner.

The offense kept the pressure on throughout the contest, never giving the Cougars many opportunities on offense, resulting in seven sporadic saves from freshman goalie Sydney Stanley (Schoharie, NY). Their best opportunity came in the final minutes of regulation, but an offsides call nullified the potential attack.

The Generals next game is in five days. They'll will host Onondaga Community College who tied with nationally ranked Mohawk Valley Community College in their first game of the season. Herkimer will host the Lazers at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 4th at Wehrum Stadium.
