Women’s Basketball defeats Lakers 59-54

(Freshman Chelsea Jory was one of three Generals to score eight points on Sunday).

HERKIMER, NY – Staying undefeated at home on Sunday (11/23), the Herkimer Generals women’s basketball team defeated Finger Lakes in the varsity gym 59-54, now winning two consecutive games against Mid State Athletic Conference opponents.

Herkimer (3-3, 1-2) started off slow until an Emily Rexford (Canton, NY) ‘and one’ play and Shahadah Williams (Syracuse, NY) field goal tied it at 9-9 with 15 minutes left to play in the first half.

Freshman I’Asia O’Garro (Copiague, NY) followed with one of her two three-point field goals in the game to give the Generals a lead which would not be relinquished in the first half. O’Garro led the team in points in the first half with seven, finishing with 13, helping the team lead by three (28-25) at half.

The Generals built their three-point lead to nine early (42-31), seeing Williams and Erica Tracy (Cobleskill, NY) both collect four points. Williams came from two offensive rebounds while Tracy’s came from one field goal and two made free throws. Williams finished with a team-high 15 and Tracy scored eight.

The lead increased to 10 with seven minutes left in regulation until foul trouble hurt the Generals offensive chemistry. The Lakers managed an 11-5 run late, broken up by a Williams steal and assist to Rexford, making it 53-46 with less than five minutes left. From there Herkimer got made baskets from O’Garro, Tracy and Rexford, giving them the ability to run the clock for the win.

Herkimer’s next game isn’t until Saturday, December 6th, giving the team 11 days off during the holiday. The Generals will travel and take on Broome Community College at 1 p.m.
