Griffin and Rexford help break losing streak at home

(Herkimer's Kristy Wallace assists to Eriel Jenkins in the first half of Saturday's game against the Royals).

HERKIMER, NY – With sophomore’s Emily Rexford (Canton, NY) and Raven Griffin (Syracuse, NY) scoring a team-high 13 points against Schenectady County Community College Saturday (1/17) afternoon, the Herkimer Generals women’s basketball team defeated the Royals 68-58 in the varsity gym, snapping a five-game losing streak in the process.

Herkimer (5-9, 2-5) took command of this one in the final seven minutes of the first half, outscoring the Royals 16-5 on field goals from Erica Tracy (Cobleskill, NY), Kristy Wallace (Frankfort, NY), Eriel Jenkins (Detroit, MI) and Rexford. Getting everything started was Tracy, scoring six points in the span of three minutes on assists from Wallace and Chelsea Jory (Herkimer, NY). She finished the game with 12 points, while Wallace had eight, Jenkins had six and Jory had four.

In the second half, Schenectady County managed to chip away at the Generals lead throughout, getting within three points of the lead twice, but a Nicole Doolen (Ilion, NY) three-point play and Griffin field goal kept the lead at two possessions. Herkimer finally took control in the final three minutes of regulation on foul shots by Tracy and Rexford and a three pointer by Griffin, making it double digits in the final minute.

The women get back at it on Monday (1/19) when they face Cayuga Community College. The Spartans have one win in their last seven games, one under the Generals who have two. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
