Designation of Acting Presidents (SUNY)

POLICY #:  HR 89-04 (SUNY)

DATE OF BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVAL:  N/A

RESOLUTION #:  N/A

POLICY STATEMENT:  The State University Board of Trustees has sole authority to appoint or approve the appointment of a campus president or acting president.  Only when so designated or approved, may a person exercise all powers and responsibilities of a CEO.

A president may delegate responsibility for day-to-day matters to a ranking campus officer when temporarily away from campus.  But the exercise of non-delegable presidential authority or use of the title "Acting President" are inappropriate in the absence of action by the State University Trustees.  It is appropriate for the Trustees to take action to approve appointments of acting presidents at the community colleges after such appointments are made by the respective institution.

BACKGROUND:  Policy statement was issued 6/11/1987 in response to several presidents raising the question with the Chancellor.  This is SUNY policy.
