Sabbatical Leave
POLICY #: HR 05-16
DATE OF BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVAL: June 29, 2006
RESOLUTION #: 05-16, 09-15
POLICY STATEMENT: It is the policy of the Board of Trustees that a faculty member shall be eligible for a sabbatical leave after six years of continuous full-time service at the College from the initial date of appointment, or from the last sabbatical leave.
BACKGROUND: In accordance with Article III, Title E (5) of the State University of New York Policies of the Board of Trustees, “sabbatical leaves are not an employment right, but rather a leave which may be made available by the campus president.” The objective of such leave is to increase an employee’s value to the State University of New York and thereby improve and enrich its program. Such leave shall be regarded neither as a reward for service nor as a vacation or rest period occurring automatically at stated intervals. Sabbatical leaves shall be granted for planned travel, study, formal education, research, writing or other experience of professional value.”
Additional reference material is on file with the Dean of Academic Affairs.
The language of this policy’s statement was amended in 2010 to further clarify the type of service the policy refers to by adding the qualifier “full-time.”
Revised: 3/3/2010
Eligible faculty members must follow the guidelines established in the Professional Association contract and the Herkimer County Community College Faculty/Staff Handbook.
Upon the recommendation of the College President, the Board of Trustees shall review Sabbatical Leave requests, and either grant or deny a sabbatical leave.
