Herkimer County Community College Commitment to Electronic Information Technology (EIT) Accessibility
Herkimer County Community College (HCCC) is committed to ensuring equal access to information, programs, services, and digital content and technologies for all individuals, including those with disabilities.
We strive to provide a digital experience that is accessible, inclusive, and usable for everyone.
Our goal is to meet or exceed the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards. These guidelines help make web content more accessible for individuals with a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, cognitive, and motor impairments.
Our Ongoing Efforts
HCCC is actively working to improve the accessibility of our websites, applications, and digital content. This includes regular testing, remediation of identified issues, and training for staff responsible for creating and maintaining digital materials. We are also working to ensure that third-party platforms and tools used by the College support accessibility standards.
HCCC EIT Accessibility Plan
HCCC maintains a formal Electronic and Information Technology (EIT) Accessibility Plan to guide our ongoing efforts toward digital accessibility. This plan is aligned with State University of New York (SUNY) policy and supports compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards.
The plan addresses key areas including:
- Websites and Software: Ongoing auditing, remediation, and monitoring of college websites and web applications
- Digital Content: Improving the accessibility of documents, PDFs, and instructional materials
- Procurement: Ensuring accessibility is considered in the purchase of software and third-party tools (including review of VPATs)
- Training: Providing accessibility training for faculty, staff, and content creators
- Monitoring and Continuous Improvement: Regular review of accessibility efforts and progress across the institution
HCCC has designated leadership and a cross-functional EIT accessibility committee to support compliance, monitor progress, and guide institutional efforts.
Accessibility is an ongoing priority at HCCC, and we are committed to continuous improvement in providing accessible digital experiences for all users.
Third-Party Content
While HCCC strives to ensure accessibility across all digital content, some third-party platforms or external resources may not be fully accessible. We are actively working with vendors to improve accessibility and encourage users to contact us if they encounter barriers so we can provide assistance or alternative access.
