Capaldo leads # 1 Herkimer past SUNY Broome 6-1

Herkimer, NY - Chris Capaldo (Smithtown, NY) scored three goals to lead the Herkimer Generals to a 6-1 win over the SUNY Broome Hornets on Saturday afternoon at Wehrum Stadium. With the win, the Generals, ranked # 1 in the latest NJCAA Division III Men's Soccer Poll, moves to 12-0 on the year.

Herkimer's first goal came just over 4 minutes into the game as Abu Secka (Oslo, Norway) put in a header off of a corner kick by Marvin Tapia (Fairfax, Virginia). Capaldo then took over, scoring the next three goals of the contest. His first one came at the 28:06 mark of the first half from a pass from Tarik Moussaoui (Oslo, Norway). That gave Herkimer a lead of 2-0 at intermission.

Capaldo then scored the first two goals of the second half, the first on an assist from Shemar Blair (Brampton, Ontario) and the second on a feed from Shane Hennessy (Yonkers, NY). After Broome scored to make it a 4-1 game, the Generals scored two goals within a 1:30 of each other to put the game away. Ryotaro Hayashi (Osaka, Japan) scored with 5:34 remaining and Sena Shintate (Kyoto, Japan) closed out the scoring with a goal with 4:01 left in the game. The last two goals both came on assists from Riley Urie (West Glover, VT).

Herkimer will close the home portion of the 2018 regular season on Wednesday night, Oct 3rd as they host longtime rival Mohawk Valley Community College. It will be Pete McAvoy night at Wehrum Stadium as the Herkimer Soccer program will honor the late captain and National Champion who passed away in 2014. Game time for the men will be 7:00 PM.
