Capaldo leads # 1 Herkimer past SUNY Broome 6-1

Herkimer, NY - Chris Capaldo (Smithtown, NY) scored three goals to lead the Herkimer Generals to a 6-1 win over SUNY Broome on Saturday afternoon at Wehrum Stadium. With the win, the Generals, ranked #1 in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll, improve to 12-0 on the season.

Abu Secka (Oslo, Norway) started the scoring for Herkimer just over 4 minutes into the game, converting a header into the net off of a corner kick from Marvin Tapia (Fairfax, Virginia). Capaldo then scored his first goal of the game with 28:06 remaining in the first half from a pass from Tarik Moussaoui to give the Generals a 2-0 lead they would take into intermission.

Capaldo scored the first two goals of the second half to give Herkimer a 4-0 lead. He tallied the first one just 2 minutes into the second half with an assist from Shemar Blair (Brampton, Ontario). His third of the day was put in 13 minutes later off of a Shane Hennessy (Yonkers, NY) assist. Broome scored with 15 minutes to go to make it a 4-1 game before Herkimer scored twice with a minute and half late in the game to seal the victory. Ryotaro Hayashi (Osaka, Japan) scored with 5:34 remaining and Sena Shintate (Kyoto, Japan) closed out the Generals scoring with 4:01 to go for the final margin of 6-1. Each of the last two goals came on assists from Riley Urie (West Glover, VT)

The Generals will their undefeated record on the line on Wednesday night as they close out the regular season portion of their 2018 campaign with a visit from longtime rival Mohawk Valley Community College. That will also be Pete McAvoy night as Herkimer will honor and remember the captain of their 2013 National Championship team who passed away in April 2014. Game time is set for 7:00 on Wednesday night.
